All in Album Releases
I've seen half of this band perform at multiple times, in multiple places. One day I will see the full band in one place at one time though. Got to have life goals. VGL really runs the gauntlet here with seven tracks from seven different series. None of them Gauntlet though. We do got some Mega Man X2, Ninja Gaiden 2, The 7th Saga, aaand Zelda, Secret of Mana and Ghosts 'n' Goblins. One series being an anime and not a game, though I think there was a Trigun game once.
When I first hit play on this EP, it suddenly washed over me how much I enjoy this band. The album seems to pick up right where 2015's Rowboat EP left off. Building from the lo-fi crunch of Rowboat to the clear, assured sounds of this album, it feels like a nice, natural progression of The Mimmos' sound. As with the previous album, there are many references to water, the sea, and water related things, which I really love. Water might be my second favorite reference point for music, the first being outer space.
As with most Mello mash up albums, there is always that theme or through line. Basically, 2 Mello's mash up albums sound like fully realized albums, and not just a collection of mashups he just bundled up and shipped out. It's just one part of why 2 Mello is the man.
Streets of Resistance has a vibe as if the story is being told by all the 'criminals' living in… oh, the city doesn't have a name. Well, crime is a complex thing, you can't get rid of it by just beating it up. Even if you have a bad ass soundtrack while doing it.
Have you ever played the classic Game Gear title Risky Raftin'!? Well you sir are a filthy liar, because the only thing about this game that exists is the kick ass album by Stettes. Funky dance tracks, foreboding arrangements, and even a very nice spacey chiptune jam in Lunar Lake
If you are in need of some 80's style synth with some epic wailing guitar work, well then you are in need of MYRONE my friend. Check out Humanity, his latest work that will get repeated plays as you cruise around in the car you might own, or maybe on the bus. All modes of travel will be much better with this blazing album.
Another one of a kind album out of Jay Tholen. Tholen's serene use of electronics, samples, and his own voice evoke a very specific mood. Something between a one man band and a one man church. It is authentically Jay Tholen though.
