Introducing game music contributor paxl13

nametag My name is Xavier LaRue and I would like to introduce myself. I'm a 28-year-old male programmer that hopes to share with you guys my love for music. I'm going to help genoboost write articles about music I love as well as many other subjects.

When I was young, I used to play a lot of video games on multiple platforms. I had an NES, a Game Boy, and games such as Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Chrono Trigger. The music in those games left their mark on me.

When I got around to listening to the intro song from the album Roots by Danimal Cannon, I literally fell in love within seconds. That was my chiptunes awakening shall I say. I couldn't believe that this was done using a single Game Boy and was totally impressed.

Danimal's first album is absolutely phenomenal, but I'm digressing already. After this discovery, I started hunting the web for more of that chip goodness and found Joshua Morse's first Waveform album which has become one of my favorite albums of all time.

07

Later on, I bought the first Indie Game Music Bundle and that was my VGM re-awakening. Since then, I've been listening almost exclusively to VGM and VGM related music.

My interest in music is pretty diverse, I enjoy pretty much everything related to VGM. To name a couple of things I absolutely love:

In conclusion, I'll try, through my words, to make you guys feel the passion I have for game music and help you discover more VGM.

Cheers, Xavier "paxl13" LaRue

Joshua Morse drops chiptune sequel 'Waveform 4'

a3493640602_10

Musician and remixer Joshua Morse has recently released Waveform 4. The album is a catchy, surreal journey through jazz and rock inspired chiptune arrangements.

"Waveform 4 incorporates sounds from the Super Nintendo as well as FM Synthesis to form a blend of 5 original Jazz-Fusion arrangements." Joshua Morse says on the album's official bandcamp page.

It has been over a year since the release of Waveform III. This sequel to the 2012 precursor covers a lot of ground in five tracks. My personal favorite track opens the album. 'Turtle Dance 3' is an upbeat jazz that makes you want to have an elevator dance party. Another favorite is the closing track, 'It's Like Flying'. The closer starts out slow, but morphs into a soaring, over-the-top track that takes you high above the clouds. The fusion of FM synthesis mixed with samples from the SNES on this track create something akin to playing Pilotwings' skydiving stagein which you drop into 1940's Las Vegas at night.

Published August 2, the album is now available to download starting at $5.

Indie games remix album "Indie B-Side!" by Joshua Morse

a0702357975_2

Longtime game remixer (and creator of one of my favorite Earthbound remixes) Joshua Morse takes it old school and new school all in one very likely overcrowded school of smooth electronic flavors.

Eschewing popular or nostalgic titles, Morse takes it to the streets by remixing some of his favorite niche indie titles in the appropriately Indie B-Side Vol. 1. Longtime readers and fans of video game remixes will recognize a bevy of musicians who belted out the original tunes including halc, Anosou, Zircon, and Disasterpeace.

Finally, considering Joshua Morse has been providing the internet with some incredible, and free, music for years, return the favor by supporting his own indie gaming endeavor Crypt Run on Kickstarter.

Kickstarter: Support indie game Crypt Run - "Death is just the beginning!"

photo-main

Support the upcoming game Crypt Run by California-based developers Lost Decade Studios, which includes accomplished VG remixer and composer Joshua Morse. The Kickstarter campaign ends August 10, and has a minimum goal of $5,000.

About Crypt Run

Crypt Run is an arcade-style medieval fantasy hack 'n slash for Windows and Mac. The dungeons change each playthrough and always offer new situations to handle. Crypt Run presents combat, exploration, and collection in a playful medieval fantasy world. What makes Crypt Run special is its unique death mechanic -- the game isn’t over when you die in Crypt Run!

I Miss You - Earthbound 2012 compilation release

I get excited about a lot of things, but Earthbound excitement is on another level! Feel free to play this album, and daydream about the Earthbound of an alternate reality. This album definitely does the Earthbound/Mother name proud.

Also, word up to Pongball, who has released plenty of great music I need to write about. Also Joshua Morse, who was on the Bound Together album all those years ago. He even did one of my all time favorite remixes, Medical Insurance.

OverClocked ReMix presents Mega Man tribute album Back in Blue

Today OC ReMix released Back in Blue, a Mega Man 9 remix album. The release was directed by Dustin "k-wix" Kulwicki and features 14 artists producing 18 arrangements. It is OCR's seventh album this year, 27th overall, and their first release dedicated to an individual Mega Man title. As can be expected, the album features several heavyweights from the community such as bLiNd, Cyril the Wolf, DarkeSword, Joshua Morse, Mazedude, Rexy and Sixto Sounds. 2011 has been a great year for video game arrangement projects so far, thanks in part to the high quality standard that OCR is known for.

Pause release compilation - Magnetic Sumo

In their usual fashion, Pause has gathered a cavalcade of incredible artists to create some amazing works of chiptune music. This time the compilation is called Magnetic Sumo and for a description simply states...

Where the laws of attraction and the eternal battle for the title of Yokozuna intertwine.

What that may mean musically is anyone's guess, but what I do know is that there are tons of artists, both new and old to Pause that come together for this compilation. Kicking things off is the band I spoke very fondly of in the past, Yakuza Heart Attack (in fact I am still listening to their most recent album fairly often). Their tumbling upbeat signature style is in full force with Bionic Boiz. From there we hear from chiptune mainstay Alex Mauer with Terraforming Mars, a melodic, simple tune that builds into a mesmerizing drum laden piece with some pumping leads. Combined these tracks set the back and forth precedent of this album from over the top funkiness to laid back dance rhythms and more.

Speaking of funky, some catchy clapping bring us to Rico Zerone and his piece Spheredivers, a deep sea, high fueled adventure, as if taking a submarine down into the otherworldly depths of the ocean floor while working on 3 hours of sleep. Moving ahead a few tracks we hear from Joshua Morse, and his atmospheric jazz track Meteor shower pro which starts off slow, but builds an incredible momentum as the song progresses into a whirlwind of musicianship on all fronts. That number moves us along to the sometimes tough to describe, but amazing to listen to vibes of Zan-zan-zawa-veia with hushhush. Another soft flowing track to lie back and reminisce to before jumping into the catchy drum and guitar styled world of Temp Sound Solutions and their cover of Alex Mauer's Floating Point, which takes an already funky tune and cranks it into high gear with some great guitar and drum work.

The album comes to an end with Give us the green light, an amazing and catchy track from Spiny Norman which brings the album to an amazing ending with it's uplifting vocals and chip pop stylings. As to be expected from Pause, we have here a compilation showcasing the many talents, styles, and instrumentation of the netlabel roster and friends. I often tell people that chiptunes is as varied a movement as the people who create it, and nowhere else is that idea shown than through compilations like this one. Once again, if you didn't click that link in the opening to grab this album, the compilation is free, and available right through here.

KK Setlist - An Unfinished Animal Crossing Remix Project release

I recently spoke of the phenomenal Bound Together album both here and in length on The Start Screen which was originally compiled and overseen by Joe Cam. Well unknown to me Cam had been hard at work on an Animal Crossing tribute that has sadly remained unfinished for well over a year. Joe Cam has decided to make the best of the situation by collecting the finished tracks along with some WIPs and releasing them for all you Animal Crossing fans to enjoy.

The album is an all star collection of VG Remixers and musicians all coming together to pay tribute to the Animal Crossing series and the fictional musician KK Slider. The album is available via torrent or thanks to KyleJCrb and kngi.org you can Download the RAR file for the full album which includes proper id3 tags and artwork by Red Kinikacha from the OCR forums.

Speaking of the forums, be sure to pop in the official thread and toss some thanks to the Joe Cam and the awesome collection of musicians and contributors if you enjoyed the album as much as I do!

The album has lots of high quality stand out songs like Sixto Sounds over the top metal in Rockin' the Crossing or the classy laid back vibes of Mustin and Anthony Lofton's rendition of KK Soul known as I Got Soul. Another stand out is what may be Benedikt Terhechte's final song ever in the very somber stringed sounds of Kristina. Perhaps the biggest highlight and the way to best tell that this was a Joe Cam organized album is the return of the Crazy Crackaz alongside GM4A favorite Chico Ray in 7am (feat. Chico Ray) which catchily blends the very NSFW styles of everyone on this track. That is just a very small sampling of the large collection of tracks.

Below is the tracklist as compiled by KyleJCrb and Joe Cam's thoughts on the release.

"This is what remains of a planned Animal Crossing remix project I set out to organize. One specific remixer was unable to finish his task which would have been a huge chunk of the project. After waiting on him for over a year, I gave up and aborted the project. These are the finished (and unfinished) tracks from what was to release.

Enjoy what could have been." -JoeCam

Castlevania: Sonata of the Damned - an OverClocked ReMix album arranged by Joshua Morse

Just in time for Halloween (although my post itself is too late for it) comes Joshua Morse with a brand new Castlevania series tribute, Castlevania: Sonata of the Damned an OverClocked ReMix album arranged by Joshua Morse. The title pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the album. Brought to us by OCR and Joshua Morse, who also helped bring us that other Castlevania tribute, to pay homage to the amazing composers throughout the Castlevania series.

Morse brings a ton of jazz flare to the monster infested rooms of Castlevania starting off with the requisite cover of Vampire Killer from the original NES title. The funky mood is upheld with plenty of piano theatrics and hip hop style breaks throughout the album. At half an hour the album is on the short side, especially when compared to other all star OCR albums, but there is certainly something to be said for brevity as the tracks are fantastic and will certainly garner repeated listens. Grab the tracks or torrent from sotd.ocremix.org and check out the track listing below. This is another great OCR release and is sure not to disappoint fans of the series.
