If you are in need of some 80's style synth with some epic wailing guitar work, well then you are in need of MYRONE my friend. Check out Humanity, his latest work that will get repeated plays as you cruise around in the car you might own, or maybe on the bus. All modes of travel will be much better with this blazing album.Read More
Head bang to this fast paced heavy metal tribute to the Mega Man 2 soundtrack. Been quite a minute since the last time I got to write about an entire tribute to the Mega Man 2 soundtrack. There are many artists, bands, and remixers that have taken on the wall to wall classic that is the MM2 OST. There is plenty of room for more interpretations of this VGM standard though.Read More
It's the one that started it all! Remastered and available on bandcamp! The track mappyland is just a wonderful assault of beautiful sound that feels good to my ears.
Darkman007 covers classic NES, Genesis, and even a ZX Spectrum game in this hard hitting album. Ten tracks of classic game tunes including Battletoads, Vectorman, Dr. Mario and more. The full album can be downloaded for $8 on Darkman's Bandcamp page.
There is something blindingly brilliant about The J. Arthur Keenes band. Ever since I heard Pamplemousse I fell in love with the whole band. Some of my favorite songs in my life are because JAK took forum requests for song ideas. Luckily there is yet more to be heard from the mighty JAK Band. 8 unreleased tracks from a never before released collection of songs written in 2013, probably.
I still remember a rare chance of hanging out with Danimal Cannon, and my ringtone was a classic from Pamplemousse, naturally. When Dan heard it, we discussed the album, which had recently come out on the now retired Pause netlabel. He said he didn't care for it! GASP To each their own of course, but my amount of shock at someone not liking The J. Arthur Keenes Band debut showed me that I really think this guy-roup is amazing.
I don't need to write about the album. Hit play. This album sells itself.
Looking for trouble.
Check out this short, over the top tribute to the music from sidescrolling beatemup classic Battletoads & Double Dragon. The Plasmas turn one of their famous medleys into an album of bit size arrangements to enjoy in any order you wish.
Returning for the first time.
So I am going to try this again. The last time I covered Megalixir, the article was borked before it even went live. Basically, I've already reviewed Megalixir's debut album, but here I am again, apparently. Megalixir has saw fit to upload a new debut album featuring more retrogaming arrangements in that signature drum/guitar style.
Perhaps if enough folks dig his tunes, they'll remain online, and if we are really lucky, how about reuploading that Kirby's Avalanche remix somewhere? I could use a theme song to my latest Let's Play series.
Nothing to do with video games you say? Too bad, this is my blog and I love singer-songwriters Shael Riley and Tom Waits both. So deal with it, and enjoy Shael's wonderful acoustic cover of this classic Tom Waits track.
This guitar driven rendition of Dire, Dire Docks has me flipping out right now. It's great stuff. Is there an OCReMix of the year ballot? Leandro Abreu definitely gets my vote thus far.
Legend of Zelda, Secret of Mana, Metal Gear, and Final Fantasy V? In four tracks, Bollenbach definitely makes the right choices. Get down to these intense rock remixes of classic Nintendo and Super Nintendo themes. I'm especially a huge fan of the MG Jungle cover on this EP.
Incredible rendition of the blood pumping Killer Instinct intro music. All that fills my brain now are words like, "Jago," "Riptor," and "Spinal!"
This music is from The Plasmas Live Band, and by the time of this writing, I definitely hope they have plenty more tunes available!
From São Paulo, Brazil comes the VGMasters and their sophomore release, Sharing the Game. This groups takes some of the hardest rocking songs from classic games, and makes them rock even harder. Mega Man X, F-Zero's Mute City, and Killer Instinct, and even King of Fighters '96 are represented in this ten track collection.
Fans of guitar and classic Nintendo will find a lot to enjoy here.
Learn what Sharing the Game is all about by grabbing the album for $7 on the VGMasters' bandcamp album page. And, ironically, even with this album cover, their bandcamp doesn't even link to the groups facebook page!
Absolutely beautiful cover of the music from Super Mario Bros 2 by The Altered Beasts, an offshoot of the amazing The OneUps VG jazz group.
Considering they are part of the impeccable OneUps, it's clear that they know their instruments, and create an impressive jazz rendition of this well known, but sometimes overlooked theme from the odd middle child of the SMB family.
I can't pass up any metal cover of the original Castlevania music (nor any other type of cover to be honest). I believe the original Castlevania to have some of the strongest overall music of any game in the NES era. Comparable only to the best of the best soundtracks of the time.
Ultimate D-Pad gives the opening theme a go in this epic cover, which is also free to download, so you can headbang any time anywhere, even during a cursed, horrible night.
Unbelievable free flowing funk rock jazz blues from the one and only, my favorite, and should be yours too, Mutherpluckin' B!
This album was years in the making and doesn't disappoint. Thirteen tracks of some of the funkiest VG remixes in the world. The album is masterfully formed into one master track as each individual song blends seamlessly with the next. Before you even know it, you've gone from the sewers of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the music of Mega Man and Super Mario.
I really can't get enough of this album, and I certainly hope to have the chance to write more on both this album and MPin' B in the future!
Unfortunately, this impeccable album can not be embeded. You can listen to the full album streaming on MPin' B's site. So you aren't empty handed though, I have uploaded the opening track, "Flyin' High (part 1)" from this phenomenal album.
A driving rock cover of the original Captain Toad's Theme from Super Mario 3D World.
Captain Toad Treasure Trackers drops later this week on December 5 for the Nintendo Wii U. GWill you be picking up Captain Toad when it releases? What did you think of the Captain Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World? Let us know in the comments, and get down to this funky jam in anticipation for Captain Toad!
Ice cold guitar covers of classic video game music.
I'm a fan of the slipping and sliding of ice worlds in video games. Those precise frozen platforms that take both skill and knowledge to traverse. Mega Beardo pays tribute to these treacherous stages in his latest album Black Ice.
The album kicks off with one of my personal favorite ice worlds in all of gaming, that of Super Mario Bros. 3. The disturbingly titled World 666 begins with the same haunting vibe of the original before going full on metal for the next four minutes.
The rest of the album also includes black metal arrangements of music from Sonic and The Goonies II. Also, guest appearances by two other VGMetal rockers in Viking Guitar and the one and only Stemage.
The album is available now for any price, including free.
