The Belmonts mysterious debut tribute to Castlevania, the '(Cassette EP)'

the belmonts

It's been a long time since I talked about new music by The Megas… and it's going to be a long time yet. The Belmonts debut with a three track EP telling a tale of vampires and violence. Why did I even bring up the Megas actually?

One thing I am seriously kicking myself over is that this album dropped less than a day before I recorded my SUBCON podcast tribute to Castlevania. Of course the full on wall of rock that The Belmonts drop are far from the norm on SUBCON, I'd have made it work.

The Belmonts rearrange "Bloody Tears" from Simon's Quest, as well as two solid gold classics by Kinuyo Yamashita, "Out of Time" and "Heart of Fire" from the original Castlevania soundtrack. Great timing on the album of course, what with Castlevania celebrating it's 30 Anniversary on September 26.

A mysterious demo tape recently arrived at Dr. Light Studios.

Wrapped in parchment and sealed with wax, the only correspondence included with the cassette was a note reading:

Release me.
-The Belmonts

Could it be, this fabled band is more than just a rumor? Tales of an obscure outfit hailing from Romania have followed us like a phantom - doppelgängers from another place and time whose sound and story are eerily similar to our own...

Who are we to reject their request? We digitized the tape, and here are the results.

The Megas present: The Belmonts.

West Coast Wigout 2 only 1 week away!

Flyer

Yup, one week away from a huge all star night of video game inspired music. So for those who are not up to speed or need some more info, or persuading to come on out, here is the rundown. June 15th at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA there is going to be an epic night of video game rock, jazz, hip hop, and chiptunes! We call it West Coast Wigout 2!

It's a full night dedicated to some of the best in video game inspired music!

Full info about the concert through here.

Who's playing? Check out this list!

A_Rival (San Francisco, CA) – rivalrivalrival.bandcamp.com

The Megas (Los Angeles, CA) – themegas.com

Random AKA Mega Ran W/ K-Murdock (Phoenix, AZ) – megaran.com

WizWars (Los Angeles, CA) – myspace.com/wizwars

EvilWezil (Los Angeles, CA) – myspace.com/evilwezil

Tanuki Suit Riot (Los Angeles, CA) – tanukisuitriot.com

Quarter Circle Jab (Fresno, CA) - myspace.com/qtrcirclejab

You might recognize A_Rival better as OCReMix artist AE who remixed the classic SF2 title music as Clamato Fever in SF2THDR. Well guess what, he raps about video games too, and you better believe his raps are as epic as his remixes!

If you read GM4A then you already know who The Megas and Random AKA Mega Ran are. If you don't know though, I think their names give enough of a hint at what they are all about. The Megas tell a tale of a man, a mega man, in rock n roll fashion. While Mega Ran on the other hand raps from multiple perspectives and about every gaming topic under the sun and then some!

EvilWezil and Wizwars are two amazing chiptune artists who perform not with a guitar, or vocals, but armed only with their respective Gameboys to rock things chiptune style.

Finally the last block of awesomeness is the amazing VG jazz group Tanuki Suit Riot who jams out to everything from Zelda, to Mega Man X, to F-Zero. Last but not least is Quarter Circle Jab, who have been around for years but are gaining much more notoriety thanks to their debut release kickbutt.exe (free download). Yup, that album includes some more great SF2 music, as well as other great games like Final Fantasy and Earthbound.

So this will definitely be some night to remember!

Once again more info through this link.

Bit Gen Gamer Fest announced for August 14, 2010

Looks like those rowdy VG rockers over on the east coast are at it again. And it appears that the sequel to the 8,16,32, and 64-Bit Genocides are announced and bigger than ever. The folks have done away with such trivialities as amounts of bits, announcing Bit Gen Gamer Fest!

The folks behind the show have already announced a whopping ten bands who will be throwing down this year. Folks coming out to this epic event will be hearing from Armadillo Tank, Rare Candy, The X-Hunters, The Ultraball, This Place Is Haunted, The OneUps, Year 200X, The Megas, Entertainment System, and Powerglove. If that isn't enough, we also have word that Youtube sensation BrentalFloss will be MCing the entire event.

This is all happening August 14th in Baltimore, MD. You can check out more of the event at their official site bitgengamerfest.com or via their Facebook and Myspace pages.

The Megas - Get Acoustic album release

The Megas are at it again, and this time, they have dimmed the lights to tell you the epic ballad of a man. A Mega Man. This new album is dubbed the simple but sense-making Get Equipped and is available from their online store as a digital download for $10. Here is some more info direct from their website.

What started as a recording of one track just for a fun recording project/something to give the forum fans turned into an entirely new album!

Get Acoustic is a track for track remix of the Get Equipped album, done with acoustic instruments... but there’s a twist! We are accompanied on the album by the Monsteropolis orchestra (programmed by Eric) to give it a new layer of epicosity.

That is the basics of it really. If you were a fan of The Megas debut Get Equipped, you will definitely love this simplified style which hosts 13 tracks, including a new acoustic version of their hard to find release (It's actually on our compilation Welcome to World 2) The Message From Dr. Light/Level Select. Not to mention all the original tracks from their debut album.

Stand outs for me included the awesome recreations of old favorites, like the even more Ballad like Promise of Redemption/Bubbleman. Also the orchestral backing to Programmed to Fight/Crashman creates a strangely appropriate build for this song, and probably creates a song even better than their original! My personal favorite from the album currently though, would have to be this newly arranged version of The Quick and the Blue/Quickman who's western duel style riffs work just as well as imagined with the acoustic guitar sounds of this album. This is definitely an album worth checking out, but I am sure if you are a fan of The Megas you have already headed over to their site to grab a copy for yourself.

MAGFest VIII announces final bands; all out of gum

At only a month and a half away, MAGFest 8 is right around the corner, and with that the MAGFest dissemination campaign is a go! If you watched the video above you know about one of the special guests who will be there, but word from Nick at the MAGFest camp has given word about some more guests including famed game developer Sid Meier.

Alongside the new guests, the final four bands have been added to the all star roster of VG influenced performances. Let's just do the list thing here, featuring the 100% full roster of amazing artists. It should be noted that none of the bands will have any gum either, which we hope is indicative of something or other.

Final bands added
The OneUps
Select Start
Entertainment System
The Megas

Previously announced bands
Armcannon
Metroid Metal
Temp Sound Solutions
Rare Candy
A_Rival
The Smash Brothers
Armadillo Tank
This Place is Haunted

So if you are on the East Coast, nay, on Earth, head over to magfest.org and sign up for the fest right now. Unless of course you want The Duke ripping off your head, and..er..just go to MAGFest.

The Megas / Entertainment System - MEGATAINMENT dual EP release

Talk about highly anticipated releases. This time we have an incredible fusion of VG superpowers, with Los Angeles based musicians The Megas joining forces with baltimore based rockers Entertainment System. When their powers combine we get the sheer destructive force known as Megatainment. The album is also known as Megatainment in fact, and is available right now via The Megas online store in both digital and limited edition pressed forms. Both will run you $5, with the pressed copy running you a small S&H fee as well. For those who like to try before you buy why don't you take a gamble for once? you can check out the opening track Elecman at The Megas facebook. Needless to say this is an amazing album from both groups and I will be throwing down a lengthy review soon for this release! For now though you might be wondering how such a fusion came together, so I leave you with The Megas explaining the album creation from their point of view.

The idea was born this time last year, when we embarked on the first Megatainment tour - basically they kept hassling us about not planning to do the MM1 soundtrack, so we said "write and record all the music and we'll do vocals..." and that's exactly what happened!

We're really excited about how this turned out - Entertainment System brings a different, heavier sound than what we play, so it was a fun challenge to come up with melodies and lyrics! Story-wise, this fits in as a nice prequel to Get Equipped.

64 Bit Genocide in one month! August 22nd in Baltimore, MD

Not only this but word has it that Entertainment System and The Megas are working on an amazing album project together titled Megatainment which is all set to be debuted at this show. Those bands are all playing, it's not just a list of awesome bands that should play together, they ARE playing together. Six of the finest bands in the VGIM community are getting together to throw one epic show. Even The Megas from LA, California are flying out to be part of the insanity.

All the videogame footage will be mixed and broadcasted by our very own VJ, GREG THE DUDE.

And finally, outside of California, in Texas actually, we have the Bible Belt Bitfest, which has been months in the making thanks to Hotdog Storm! If you are in Texas it's pretty obvious you have to go to this show!

Wrap up and footage from Level Up! Level 2!

Hey folks who missed our second anniversary show Level Up! because you are cheap asses or don't live close enough to go. Hopefully the latter. Lucky for you fine folks we have footage of the show thanks to some fine folks!

The event far exceeded my expectations with about 100 people turning out for the show (double what we had last year), and on a Sunday no less! The doors opened at 8:30 with only a handful of stragglers entering, which led to more anxiety for me. Only a handful of people by the time Hot Waffles was set to take the stage at 9PM. Luckily as their set continued many more folks started piling into the CIA. I assume most of which became quick fans of Hot Waffles after songs like Vice City Blues, and George Lucas Raped Our Childhood. Sadly no footage of the fantastic band has yet to surface, but I hold out hope that someone recorded something, as they had quite a hilarious set.

After Hot Waffles ended to a good bit of applause and a much larger crowd then they started with, the King of the Boss Fights himself ZeaLouS1 took the stage. ZeaLouS1 did a phenomenal set with new material, old classics, and sidekick Lil Harmz. Definitely some awesome stuff, you can see footage of a few songs over at zealous1.com in fact!

ZeaLouS1 - Level Up

Third up, was the band most everyone was there to see. The Megas, who threw one hell of an epic set. The venue was pretty packed. From intro to encore ending they were intense and sounded great. I would like to add that their encore song was The Message from Dr. Light, available only on Welcome to World 2. We have footage for most of their set, so hopefully I can get it up on the youtube soon.

The Megas - Intro / I Want to be the One

The show finished with another band from the first Level Up! last year, Super Barrio Brothers. The team of Dumbfoundead and 8 Bit Bandit (and some of the thirsty fish crew) had quite a set, with tons of freestyles, a small piece of a capella from the Heavy Troopa is Ready to Launch! compilation, and of course some of the amazing tunes from the Super Barrio Brothers LP.

Super Barrio Brothers - Three Pipes Down

Super Barrio Brothers closed out the show, which by all of my standards was one hell of a success! Thank you to all the bands that performed, the CIA for letting us throw the show, and everyone who came out to have a great time! We hope to be throwing another show sometime soon, so watch out for that, and of course, go chill with us at the listening party this coming Sunday!

Oh yeah, and check out the playlist on youtube for even more videos!

Level Up! Level 2! Sunday July 13th in Los Angeles! [UPDATE]

That's right. GM4A has been in business another year, and in doing so are throwing another birthday bash!

Once again the show will be at the CIA in North Hollywood, California. Artists performing are some of LA's finest talent, such as The Megas, ZeaLouS1, and Super Barrio Brothers. It's going to be a fantastic concert to say the least!

The show is 10$ and the doors open at 8:30pm and the show starts at 9. Show up and hang out with us, watch some amazing music, and enjoy being amongst your VGIM brethren!

Also, this will be the official release of our second anniversary album Welcome to World 2! So if you are around Los Angeles, this will be the place to pick up the album!

[UPDATE] We have also just confirmed the band Hot Waffles to perform at the show as well!

Into the Score - The Quick and the Megas

Do you love The Megas as much as us at GM4A do? Do you wish you could get inside their heads and understand how they make the great music they do? Or perhaps you wish to know what lies ahead for these amazing VG rockers. Well if you've ever asked yourself these questions, you are in luck! Our good pal Kenley over at the Into the Score podcast has just released his latest episode, which is a full 45 minute episode dedicated to The Megas and their newest album Get Equipped. You can listen and download the latest episode at this link! I'll let Kenley explain some more about the podcast!

Recorded on March 20th, 2008, this interview between “Into the Score” and “The Megas” chronicles the journey from the first track of the VGM rock band’s epic and monumental album “Get Equipped” to its release and crowd response! The album covers nearly every track from Capcom’s late-80s release, “Mega Man 2″ and is performed with cutting musical accuracy and polished with clean production in the band’s own “Dr. Light Studios.”

In this discussion, we talk about the band’s creative process, their performances, styles of writing and the eases and trials of the album, from start to finish! We also hear some of the tracks from start to finish, which is really nice!

So remember, if interested, hit up the proper update or subscribe to the podcast!

The Megas - Get Equipped album release

There is just no end to the amazing albums getting released lately. This time Los Angeles natives The Megas have finally released their long awaited album Get Equipped which has spent a year in the making. The release is available for digital download as well as pre-orders for the physical copy, which includes a digital download copy so you don't even have to wait! The digital download copy is going for $10 while the physical album + digital download is going for the same $10 plus a $3 S&H fee. Both purchases can be made via their newly redesigned website. Also worth mentioning is they have some new awesome shirt designs coming soon too.

I'm personally partial to the arm gun design, since it clearly illustrates my lifelong dream of replacing this useless arm for a very awesome gun. Their shirts are set to be available early February, so be sure to keep checking their site for details.
