Week in Video Game Inspired Music 2/08 – 2/21

Unfortunately I missed last week's Week in VGIM but oddly enough it was quite the slow week for VGM news and wasn't too tough playing catch up this week. I do hope I did not miss anything though! Up above we have some fantastic artwork by GaryStorkamp aptly named The King of Kong. Also there are plenty new podcasts out from the past two weeks, as well as a good couple interviews and more. GM4A also had it's very awesome second chiptune show, Pizza and Chips 2, which was a pretty rousing success, and a great show was given by all the performers involved. Watch out for a bigger update on that soon. Now for the links!

Up above we have some amazing piece 'Super Smash Bros Brawl' by speedking, who you may remember as the artist for Temp Sound Solutions' Now Your Playing With Powar 7. So be sure to check out some more of his great VG inspired work as well! Now the news!

VIDEO This weeks video is courtesy of iPhone developer Tag Games who recently announced their newest app, B-Boy Beats. This game will feature a list of nerdcore artists the likes of MC Frontalot, Optimus Rhyme, Id Obelus, Ultraklystron, Rai and Magitek. You can read a preview of the game via iPhone Reviews and it seems the game will be released sometime in February. Check out the trailer below featuring one of my favorite songs by the experimental nerdcore hip hop groups Magitek.

Look up above, today's art is not a painting, but a very cool clay sculpture done by artist unicornstrike, and simply entitled Roselia. Be sure to check out more of her impressive video game inspired sculptures as well!

In GM4A news, if you look over to your left, you will see an advertisement for our next concert! It is called Pizza and Chips 2, and will feature amazing music by several great VG inspired musicians. More info for that on the event page.

That is about it from me this week, except for the unrelated but very sad news that Conan O'Brien has walked away from the Tonight Show, but hopefully he will be popping up soon with something new and awesome. Anyway, check out the links below for this week's news! NEWS

VIDEO This weeks video comes courtesy of the one and only MAGFest. This year's series of performers really outdid itself with tons of amazing songs, and performances. This is but the smallest of highlights below. Armcannon covers the amazing Chrono Trigger soundtrack with their arrangement of Zeal, orginally from Bad Dudes' Chronotorious album. Also be sure to see one of their latest debuts in their amazing F-Zero medley, which came very very close to being this weeks video, considering my endless love for the music from F-Zero. In the end though, the amazing guitar solos in the below video just edged it out for video of the week.

Week in Video Game Inspired Music 1/11 - 1/17

I am finally back with the first This Week in VGIM of the new year, and decade, and millenium (depending on where you start counting). Up above we have some incredible artwork by zgul-osr1113 and goes by the name Like Jazz Zora band Indigogos. This piece definitely has video game music written...ahem...drawn all over it! Well in site related news I have to reiterate that we have our second release. This time it's some ambient space tunes courtesy of Doug Leinen and his new album Songs to Sing in Space (download here). I have been away for a bit due to unforeseen circumstances that were mentioned before, so there is a huge list of remixes this time around. Now let's get down to the nitty gritty of the news.

VIDEO Video this week is pretty crazy, but hard not to enjoy, and comes our way via Nobuooo and Tiny Cartridge. The song is “Star Soldier - Soul of the 16 Shot” by Takahashi Meijin and IOSYS and Tiny Cartridge has this to say about it, "This wondrous music video comes from Takahashi Meijin Legend: Soul of the 16-Shot, an upcoming album remixing songs from classic Hudson titles like Lode Runner, Challenger, and Milon’s Secret Castle."

It definitely sounds like this should be one catchy, album of some of the more overlooked classic themes of the NES era. Enjoy, and don't get your mind blown too much.

Week in Video Game Inspired Music 12/14 – 12/20

Up above here we have awesome Gameboy artwork by 8bitcollective member MassiveUntilMorning, with his simply titled but well done DMGpaintjob. Speaking of artwork, our resident artist Nyno added an epic Earthbound inspired Krakken to the background, if you had not noticed yet. Well besides that, this week saw a few big things, one is the return of Joe Allen to the Gamewave Podcast, another was our very own first ever GM4A Records release of Challenge! by Comptroller. Be sure to check out both of those, not to mention all the other big news this past week below.

VIDEO The video this week is of course from the recently passed Blip Festival 2009. Well perusing for some recaps of the event I came across little-scale's blog and found some footage of the amazing J. Arthur Keenes Band performing pieces from their latest Pause release Pamplemousse.

Awakening by MOOMANiBE

Another week ended in VGIM and we find ourselves with over 10 new OCReMix tracks to celebrate ten years online. One of which is from good friend XMark who appeared on our second mixtape. Also with the release of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (which is awesome by the way) for the Wii this week, news comes that Akira Yamaoka has left Konami, making this possibly the final SH soundtrack by him. Finally, up above we have some interesting FF6 (or 3) artwork called Awakening by MOOMANiBE which looks at one part of the game from another perspective. You can check out more of his work on his DeviantArt. Along with last week's picture these may be getting a tad risque, but this is just the awesome stuff I come across. We shall see if next week continues this streak or not.

VIDEO This week we have an awesome video of a performance by Random, AKA Mega Ran. This was from a show I was lucky enough to attend in Los Angeles this past November 27th. Mega Ran put on a great performance, and this is my particular favorite. This was recorded by Jeriaska of Nobuooo.com and you can see the rest of the concert through here. Although if last weeks live chiptunes footage is more up your alley, then check out BOSTON8BIT's youtube page for more footage from that concert!

Chiptuned Rockman composer interviews

Rockin' In the Bleep World - Musicians on Chiptuning Mega Man from Jeriaska on Vimeo.

Just recently Jeriaska of nobuooo.com uploaded the above video from the recent Tokyo Game Show in where a handful of the remixers from the Chiptuned Rockman album, which was released at TGS, discuss their work on the album. The album is an amazing collection of Megaman (Rockman in japan of course) tracks remixed in classic NES style from both VG composers as well as chiptune musicians like Virt, Saskrotch, and chibi-tech. If you can hunt down the album, it is definitely worth a listen!

Also for more music news that came out of TGS this year, check out Jeriaska's post from earlier this month on GameSetWatch.

Nobuooo 2.09 update

It's a new month, and with that it seems it is time for another update from Jeriaska for Nobuooo.com, a Digg style website for news in the VGM and VG inspired music community. This months update focuses on the album Mega Ran 9 through Random's (AKA Mega Ran) own words.

Mega Ran goes over how the album became a reality and how each song came together. Definitely a good show for any fan of Random. Watch the video below and be sure to vote for the news at nobuooo.com/item/5348

Game Set Watch interview with Hiroyuki Iwatsuki

Recently Jeriaska of nobuooo.com wrote a lengthy and in depth interview with Hiroyuki Iwatsuki for Game Set Watch. Read the interview and learn about a very interesting game composer who has created music on a variety of titles from the NES and Gameboy all the way to the Xbox 360. He has also done many cult classic game titles like Wild Guns and Pocky and Rocky to Chaos World and Ninja Warriors. Definitely a good read to learn about an often overlooked figure in game music.

Nobuooo 10.08 Update

The Nobuooo update for the month of October is now up! This month covers topics such as Into the Score's look into the soundtrack of Shadow of the Colossus, the soundtrack to upcoming game Siren, the new international release of the Final Fantasy Remix album, and also Larry "Liontamer" Oji discusses OverClocked ReMix, and the upcoming SF2 HD remix album. Check out the video below!

Jeriaska interviews Select Start at Forever Fantasy

Jeriaska, writer for Siliconera as well as creator of the wonderful Nobuooo.com website has recently finished up an interview with VG chamber music group Select Start.

The interview focuses on Select Start's love of Square music and more particluarly the Final Fantasty series. The also discuss the songs included on Welcome to World 2 and our own website here! It is quite an in depth interview, and of course an interesting read. Check out this link to read the article in it's entirety.

Nobuooo 9.08 Update

Jeriaska of Nobuooo has recently returned from PAX, and with him he brought home Nobuooo 9.08 Update, all with news and interviews from PAX 08! This update includes interviews with Sega about both Yakuza 2 and Valkyria Chronicles, Penny Arcade Adventures by PA and Hothead games. Also interviews with Anamanaguchi and the creators of REFORMAT THE PLANET and MC Frontalot and creator of Nerdcore Rising. Definitely a very interesting episode covering both vg music and the fans surrounding it.

GM4A website updates

So it's been a very long time since I updated folks on the status of this web page. Well here is a long overdue update then!

  1. I have fixed the "Donate" button on here, and the compilation web pages (I didn't know they were broken), so if you have wanted to donate a couple bucks our way, this is your chance! Of course if you decide to it is greatly appreciated!
  2. I added a ton of stuff to the sidebar to your right. I'll explain everything there now. We now have direct links to our free online compilations, and will continue adding to that in the future of course. Then we have the old standbys of links and band of the month (which is Doctor Octoroc this month). Another new one is the link to our still fairly new semi-official podcast Letters vs Numbers, be sure to check it out sometime!

Below that is another new section, which I call "supported events" This is where we have flyers for all the upcoming events that we support and hope you check out and attend. Right now we have some great concerts coming up so check them out, just click the flyers to be taken to the bands/websites page with all the info. Under that is our blogroll, which has grown quite a bit over time. check out some of those links sometime, they will all take you to awesome websites!

The final two things to point out are the Nobuooo RSS Feed, and the Twitter RSS Feed. The Nobuooo feed takes you to the wonderful new website Nobuooo.com. This site is like Digg, but specifically for news in the VGM and VGIM communities. Sign up and help decide what the biggest news stories are in video game music! The Twitter feed is a bit more personal, as it is a link to my personal twitter feed, if you are interested in finding out what I am up to on a daily basis as well as several other fine folks from the blogging and vgm community then sign up over at twitter.com and start following some folks today. The more folks who sign up there the more fun it is to use.

  3. Third thing to let folks know about, or actually remind them about, are our websites latest compilation efforts. Heavy Troopa is Ready to Launch! and Here Comes a New Challenger. Both wonderful albums that deserve a lot of attention. Check out their respective web pages to download them free!

Heavy Troopa is Ready to Launch!
    http://gamemusic4all.com/heavytroopa.html

    Here Comes a New Challenger
    http://gamemusic4all.com/newchallenger.html

  4. And finally, you probably noticed I switched the logo to the spiffy number you see at the top of the page. It's by Mexico native artist Carlos Lerma and was actually made way back in April 2007. Thanks go out to him once again for the awesome work! Enjoy! (and don't forget that donate button below it.)

I do believe I have covered everything. Thanks as always for reading and supporting our website, and feedback is always welcome, so don't be shy, feel free to chat us up!
