”I’ve always loved Yuzo Koshiro’s work on the Streets of Rage series (as well as the games themselves) and thought it would be fun to make my own soundtrack for a scrolling beat ‘em up.

So 10 years after Franklyn journeyed to Hot Dog City, I decided to throw him and his two friends, Reddy and Eggret into a city-wide brawl in an effort to stop Mayor Helmen (who is really the diabolical Mustardo) from destroying their beloved city.”

Disc 2 coming soon...

Chiptune tribute to Friday the 13th by lpower

More late November creepiness thanks to my relaxed attitude towards music posts as well as the rather late scheduling of many a Halloween album. Come on guys, you can't all release them on October 31st, be reasonable.

Well lpower has many a reason to be unreasonable with his latest release via PteSquad. The OST nature of the album actually sets a nice ambient tone that lingers in the background, giving that perfect slasher movie vibe. Consider listening to this album as you walk around late at night playing Pokemon Go. I did that, and I am now terrified.

F13 is the soundtrack to a video game heavily inspired by the Friday the 13th horror series. It all began when David Arseneau started work on a post-grad research project into how pop culture phenomena are pieced together from various component parts and he chose to explore slasher movies and the Friday the 13th franchise. One aspect of this project was creating a working video game and so he enlisted lpower to provide the soundtrack, as well as much of the in-game pixel art.

The whole project will be exhibited by David next year, but for now you can hear this immense, clinical, chilling OST full of retro synth sounds. There are also cassette versions for sale over on lpower’s Bandcamp page! Grab one at: lpower.bandcamp.com. And download pixel art for the game by David and lpower: ptesquad.com/images/f13art.zip.

Pterodactyl Squad chiptune compilation 'Weezer - The Second 8-bit Album'

There isn't a lot to explain here. Weezer is one of the finest pop rock bands of the 90s, and chiptunes are wonderful. Listen to over a dozen different chiptune composers rearrange more classic Weezer tracks. These tracks are the perfect way to wind into the Autumn months.

It's been seven years since the original so we thought it was time for an update - here's our second tribute to those nerds in Weezer! Featuring all sorts of songs, from the band's biggest hits to obscure rarities, recreated using sound chips from old school video game consoles.

Thanks to Rivers Cuomo/Weezer (and The Rentals and Scott Murphy).

Cooshinator drops 45 minutes of intense Game Boy based chiptune with 'Your Eyes That Once Were Never Weary Of Mine'

LSDj

The latest out of Pteradactyl Squad is a full length single track mix by Cooshinator. As far as I know, it's the first album of it's kind on Pte Squad, but it fits right in. As I began listening to the album I wanted to label this a chiptune rave dance mix, but as the album moves forward, it becomes increasingly more difficult to label this track as anything other than the 'LSDj trip" Pte Squad describes it as.

If you enjoy intense, bass rattling soundscapes and instrumental adventures, and I know I do, then check out this album.

Your Eyes That Once Were Never Weary Of Mine is a 47-minute LSDj trip, an expansive, experimental journey through the flashing, pulsing circuits of two Game Boys. It’s a power struggle between harder/dance-able sections that convey some sort of urgency and frustration, and calmer sections that transmit a sense of melancholy and desire for transcendence. Are you ready? Then let’s begin.

Check out 'Let's Go Home,' the latest chiptune album by Weave of K.

Always glad to rep new Pterodactyl Squad. This is a catchy Atari 2600 based album by San Francisco based musician Weave of K.

Five years since his last EP on the Squad, Weave of K. has crafted five breezy/dreamy ditties from the circuits of the often-underused Atari 2600 (along with a sprinkling of NES sounds)!

”I wanted to keep the EP as simple as I possibly could, just like the Atari 2600 games way back when. The song titles are inspired by places in San Francisco and Oakland that have a reputation with deaths. It may sound dark but really it’s no darker than the concepts of a lot of Atari 2600 games. There’s a lot of shoot ‘em up games and there are a lots of deaths - fortunately for the console, it had a reset switch.”

Electric Light Orchestra chiptune tribute compilation 'ELO: The Video Game OST'

ELO SHMUP VGM OST

DOWNLOAD FOR FREE @ ptesquad.com/more/pte050.html

The cover art for Electric Light Orchestra’s Out of the Blue is spacey and iconic and it got us thinking about how fun an ELO-themed shmup might have been back in the day... Well, here’s the next best thing: a chiptune tribute that could have worked as a soundtrack for such a game!

The eight artists here have used hardware and samples from various old video game consoles to pay tribute to some of Jeff Lynne’s most memorable songs, and it only seemed fitting to commission cover artwork that mimicked the crappy Atari box art of the same era when ELO rose to prominence. We hope you have as much fun listening as we did putting it together!

Weezer + Mega Man = The Teal Album by Ramyn King

 Front artwork

Pterodactyl Squad continue a summer of awesome released with Ramyn King's The Teal Album.

It's been five summers since Pterodactyl Squad released Weezer - The 8-bit Album, a landmark chiptune tribute. Now it's time for the Squad to pay tribute to the same band once again, this time with an outstanding seven-track EP from Ramyn King. Fusing the musical and lyrical stylings of old-school Weezer with melodies from the Mega Man series, The Teal Album is truly something special - 50% Weezer, 50% Mega Man, 100% rad.

Debut release from French chiptune duo, Please Lose Battle

pleaselosebattle

Pterodactyl Squad have made their first release of 2014 with a 6-track EP from French chiptune duo, Please Lose Battle. It's full of NES sounds and highly infectious melodies, and is free to download over at the release page.

This debut EP from Please Lose Battle is a tribute to childhood gaming and the emotions we experienced back then: distraction, frustration, joy, impatience...

Everything here was made using FamiTracker with 2A03 + N163 or VRC6 (there is no DPCM channel, except for the effects at the end of the final track). The goal was to explore the possibilities and restrictions of a unique tool, in turn challenging musical creativity and songwriting.

Keep up to date with Please Lose Battle through their Facebook page.

HarleyLikesMusic returns with The Sixth Extinction

The world's most active KORG DS-10 artist, HarleyLikesMusic has just released a new 10-track album through Pterodactyl Squad entitled The Sixth Extinction.

HarleyLikesMusic's debut on Pterodactyl Squad is an epic concept album: the soundtrack to various threats (zombies, aliens and dinosaurs) to the earth's human population. Using his Nintendo DS Harley creates industrial synth sounds and sets them to bouncy rhythms, but on The Sixth Extinction he gives his music a decidedly dark twist.

This guy is the world's premier KORG DS-10 musician for a reason - now you can find out why.

You can also hear Harley explain the whole concept behind the release through his Soundcloud page (with Joe of the Gamewave Podcast).

Two labels team up to release lpower's Abinox II

Sometimes, for one reason or another, music by great artists goes largely unnoticed by the masses. In the eyes of many chiptune fans lpower is one of those artists. His "soundtrack of a soundtrack", Abinox dropped in November last year and gained cult status among certain sections of the chiptune community. Many fans were overjoyed to hear news of a sequel, and today that sequel hit the internet in the form of Abinox II. Little is known about lpower himself, but Telefuture and Pterodactyl Squad have teamed up to make sure that's not the case with his music. The digital version of Abinox II is available for free through Pterodactyl Squad, while Telefuture have produced a run of 50 cassettes which are now selling for $8 over at the Telefuture store. The cassettes are a sight to behold, professionally duplicated with orange shells, white imprinting, and green tinted cases. Abinox II cassette

Word is that lpower is already working on the third and final part of the Abinox trilogy. Don't miss out on experiencing what Pterodactyl Squad are calling a release that "pushes the boundaries of chiptune".

With Abinox I lpower explored what makes a video game soundtrack tick. On Abinox II he returns with a similar concept in mind. Once again, the basic components (sounds, structures and emotions) of his favourite soundtracks are used as building blocks, this time using a wider sound palette, including the Nintendo Entertainment System and DX7 Synthesizer, allowing space for more experimentation and resulting in a deeper, darker release. Moreover, the compositions are longer but refuse to repeat or loop, creating a strong narrative and constant progression. Telefuture and Pterodactyl Squad can safely say that this is one sequel that doesn't suck.

Tribute to the beaches of Brazil in 'Chiptune Verão' by Videogame Orchestra

Chiptune Verão artwork

From out of the blue comes Videogame Orchestra's latest project - an album of bossa nova chiptunes, each one dedicated to a beach in Brazil. The release is called Chiptune Verão and contains over an hour of chilled out summer-themed music.

In fact, the release is split into two discs; the first contains the original 8-bit renditions and the second has their 16-bit counterparts. I can't imagine anything better than lounging on the beach this summer with this playing in the background.

Check it out over at Pterodactyl Squad or through Bandcamp.

Dark City by Renegade 8

Pterodactyl Squad have just released Dark City by Renegade 8, a new NES chiptune artist from Portugal. If you're a fan of melodic, action-oriented chiptunes make sure to check it out. It even has a gritty underlying storyline inspired by Streets of Rage! It's available to download for free at ptesquad.com. Dark City front cover

Renegade 8's debut release is a mesmerizing nighttime journey through the seedy underbelly of chiptune. Pulling a variety of samples from the crackling guts of an NES, Renegade 8 uses these sounds to craft melodic, action-packed chiptunes reminiscent of side-scrolling beat 'em ups set across subway stations, dimly-lit streets and grimy alleyways. Do you have what it takes to make it all the way to Dark City in one piece?

  1. Underground Rendezvous
  2. Subway Shadows
  3. Vigilante Justice
  4. Smashin' Back Doors
  5. Danger on the Dancefloor
  6. She's With Me
  7. Dark City
  8. Moonlit Faceoff

Pterodactyl Squad release Abinox by lpower

lpower has been busy for months working on his latest release, and it's turned out to be his most in-depth and complex work yet. As usual, the whole thing is available to download for free from the release page over at Pterodactyl Squad.

Abinox front cover

lpower is back with his most absorbing release to date - Abinox.

The compositions here are longer, moodier and feature more minimalist concepts than his previous works. The Canadian composer wanted to examine and explore how 16-bit video game soundtracks were put together in the old days, and he assembled a 'super setup' of nostalgic chips and synths (TurboGrafx-16, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, NES, OSCar synth, Yamaha DX7) with which to do so. The music on Abinox does not always loop, allowing lpower more freedom than usual to study the emotions of in-game progression, the ups and downs, victories and failures. So rather than focus on a specific storyline or genre, Abinox is actually a game soundtrack about game soundtracks.

  1. Return of The
  2. Makin It
  3. In the Thick of It
  4. Risk Your Best Endeavours
  5. Face to Face to Face
  6. Attacks and Deliverance
  7. Hills
  8. Absolute No Give Up
  9. City of Null

It's All In The Reflexes - A John Carpenter Tribute

Pterodactyl Squad have just sprung back into life with an 8-bit tribute to John Carpenter. It features contributions from R-Sunset, Comptroller, seal of quality, Videogame Orchestra, EvilWezil, Videovalvontaa, Lorenzo Music, OxygenStar, SLAW, arcadecoma. and Shrimps and is, as usual, free to grab from ptesquad.com. It's All In The Reflexes - A John Carpenter Tribute cover

Budgetary limitations faced by John Carpenter at the dawn of his career forced him to take to his synthesizer collection and create his own visionary lo-fi scores for his movies. Pioneering video game music composers were similarly restricted by primitive sound chips and as a result, tiny magical sounds were forced into existence. How minimal can minimal get? At Pterodactyl Squad HQ we decided to find out by marrying the greatest hits of John Carpenter with the style and hardware of vintage video game systems. It's all about doing much with not much. It's all in the creativity. It's all in the imagination. It's all in the reflexes.

The Dark Side of the Moon - The 8-bit Album

Not content with the wild success of Weezer - The 8-bit Album, Pterodactyl Squad have released a similar tribute album, this time producing an 8-bit replica of Pink Floyd's 1973 album, The Dark Side of the Moon.

Although attempted numerous times before, Pterodactyl Squad have finally done the original album justice with the definitive 8-bit interpretation of Pink Floyd's progressive rock classic. Produced as an 8-bit mirror of the original, the music on this release was created using sounds from various old games consoles including the Sega Mega Drive and Nintendo Game Boy.

The release sees each track tackled by a different artist with contributions from Bit_Rat, EvilWezil, khades, Rabato, sergeeo, Videogame Orchestra, Jason Vincion, echosignal (C-jeff) and Temp Sound Solutions, and art by Steve Jenkins of Crystal Labs.
