ELO SHMUP VGM OST

DOWNLOAD FOR FREE @ ptesquad.com/more/pte050.html

The cover art for Electric Light Orchestra’s Out of the Blue is spacey and iconic and it got us thinking about how fun an ELO-themed shmup might have been back in the day... Well, here’s the next best thing: a chiptune tribute that could have worked as a soundtrack for such a game!

The eight artists here have used hardware and samples from various old video game consoles to pay tribute to some of Jeff Lynne’s most memorable songs, and it only seemed fitting to commission cover artwork that mimicked the crappy Atari box art of the same era when ELO rose to prominence. We hope you have as much fun listening as we did putting it together!

Los Angeles is all set for a chiptune/chipthrash/thrashchip invasion this weekend, and the party is going all weekend! As the flyer above states, the big show, Frequency 2.0, is happening at The Smell January 19th and 20th, but for those who can't even wait that long for some chiptune action,  there is also a preshow happening in Pasadena on the 18th.

Check out LA8Bit.com and the associated facebook page for full info.

The Dark Side of the Moon - The 8-bit Album

Not content with the wild success of Weezer - The 8-bit Album, Pterodactyl Squad have released a similar tribute album, this time producing an 8-bit replica of Pink Floyd's 1973 album, The Dark Side of the Moon.

Although attempted numerous times before, Pterodactyl Squad have finally done the original album justice with the definitive 8-bit interpretation of Pink Floyd's progressive rock classic. Produced as an 8-bit mirror of the original, the music on this release was created using sounds from various old games consoles including the Sega Mega Drive and Nintendo Game Boy.

The release sees each track tackled by a different artist with contributions from Bit_Rat, EvilWezil, khades, Rabato, sergeeo, Videogame Orchestra, Jason Vincion, echosignal (C-jeff) and Temp Sound Solutions, and art by Steve Jenkins of Crystal Labs.

You can download the whole release for free over at ptesquad.com.

Evilwezil - Chronophobe album release

EvilWezil = Chronophobe
EvilWezil = Chronophobe

A few months back we received another amazing Pause release from EvilWezil. This time, in full length glory is Chronophobe. I'll let EvilWezil explain, in a manner of speaking...

Attention residents of 3052. I, the future’s EvilWezil, have travelled back in time to free my past self from your unbreakable ultraprison. Together, we bring the destruction of your valuable time line. Those of you who continue to exist, you will not remember the world as it now is known. We shall erase your ancestors, Summer Sage, and your Chrononauts is not match for our armada which has all the splendid villains of history. We do not desire the money already. We pursue only vengeance, and times are on our side. EvilWezils cannot be stopped!!!

And with that kicks off 15 tracks of glitched out, over the top chiptune mayhem. From the futuristic and ominous tones of the opening track Operation Timeout we are sent on a cybernetic journey through time. The genres and styles swirl in a glitchy mix of moody tones and fast paced walls of sound throughout the album. Metal in the Microwave starts out with an ambient discord, before slowly building into a villainous battle song. Then there is personal favorite track Some Times Roll Hard which throws together high rhythms with a glitchy lead track that creates an ever churning unease that leads you through the song.

Another stand out track is Nothing Ever Changes, a dreamlike track which washes over you with a wave of chip sounds and sporadic effects to create a feeling of almost nightmarish discomfort. The album closes with Singularity Falls, A rough reprise that creates an almost space western type feeling as the glitchy rhythms lumber forward over a nostalgic lead which takes hold of the song, and slowly finishes off the album.

Clocking in at nearly an hours worth of music, Chronophobe is definitely a strong experience that will leave you depleted through it's stirring tones and glitches. Once again you can grab the album through the Chronophobe download page. You can also see EvilWezil performing live next week at our concert West Coast Wigout 2.

West Coast Wigout 2 only 1 week away!

Flyer

Yup, one week away from a huge all star night of video game inspired music. So for those who are not up to speed or need some more info, or persuading to come on out, here is the rundown. June 15th at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA there is going to be an epic night of video game rock, jazz, hip hop, and chiptunes! We call it West Coast Wigout 2!

It's a full night dedicated to some of the best in video game inspired music!

Full info about the concert through here.

Who's playing? Check out this list!

A_Rival (San Francisco, CA) – rivalrivalrival.bandcamp.com

The Megas (Los Angeles, CA) – themegas.com

Random AKA Mega Ran W/ K-Murdock (Phoenix, AZ) – megaran.com

WizWars (Los Angeles, CA) – myspace.com/wizwars

EvilWezil (Los Angeles, CA) – myspace.com/evilwezil

Tanuki Suit Riot (Los Angeles, CA) – tanukisuitriot.com

Quarter Circle Jab (Fresno, CA) - myspace.com/qtrcirclejab

You might recognize A_Rival better as OCReMix artist AE who remixed the classic SF2 title music as Clamato Fever in SF2THDR. Well guess what, he raps about video games too, and you better believe his raps are as epic as his remixes!

If you read GM4A then you already know who The Megas and Random AKA Mega Ran are. If you don't know though, I think their names give enough of a hint at what they are all about. The Megas tell a tale of a man, a mega man, in rock n roll fashion. While Mega Ran on the other hand raps from multiple perspectives and about every gaming topic under the sun and then some!

EvilWezil and Wizwars are two amazing chiptune artists who perform not with a guitar, or vocals, but armed only with their respective Gameboys to rock things chiptune style.

Finally the last block of awesomeness is the amazing VG jazz group Tanuki Suit Riot who jams out to everything from Zelda, to Mega Man X, to F-Zero. Last but not least is Quarter Circle Jab, who have been around for years but are gaining much more notoriety thanks to their debut release kickbutt.exe (free download). Yup, that album includes some more great SF2 music, as well as other great games like Final Fantasy and Earthbound.

So this will definitely be some night to remember!

Once again more info through this link.
